PRESTON BISSETT

DEATH OF THE REV. JOHN SATTERTHWAITE BOLDEN

We regret to have to announce the death of the Rev. John Satterthwaite Bolden, M.A., formerly Rector of Preston Bissett, which occured on Saturday last at his residence, Bradford Abbas, near Sherborne, Dorset. The deceased gentleman was in the eighty-seventh year of his age, and was the son of J. Bolden, Esq., of Hyming, North Lancashire.

He graduated at Cambridge, was ordained deacon in 1831, and priest the following year by the Bishop of Chester.

Mr. Bolden, who spent a portion of his early life in Australia, held the living of Preston Bissett for many years, resigning it in 1873, when he was succeeded by his son, the Rev. Charles Bolden, B.A., the present Rector.

The funeral took place on Thursday, March 17th, at Preston Bissett. The body was brought by rail from Sherborne, on Wednesday, arriving at Preston Bissett Church at about 6 p.m. the same evening. The coffin was met by the Rector (deceased's son), and the opening portion of the service was read by him while the coffin was placed in the chancel (a good congregation having assembled) and here the body remained until next day.

The remaining portion of the service was held at 2.30 p.m., Thursday, and was conducted by the Rev. R. Holt (vicar of Hillesden), assisted by the Rector. The hymn "Jesus Lives" was sung, Mr. R. Warr presiding at the harmonium. The chief mourners present were Rev. C. Bolden (deceased's son), A. Clayton, Esq. (deceased's son-in-law), John L. Bolden, Esq., George Bolden, Esq., R. Sautell, Esq.; and among the congregation were Miss Russell, Mr. F. Barge, Mrs. and Miss Seaton, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls, Mr. W. Phillips, Miss Morris, Mr. H. Young (Buckingham), Mr. and Mrs. Varney, Jesse Fathers, Mr. Peach, Mr. And Mrs. Turner (Westbury), Mrs. Faulkner, and many of the parishioners and inhhabitants.

The grave, which was lined with laurel leaves and moss, was situated close to the vestry door, and many paid a farewell visit after the body had been lowered. The coffin, which was of polished oak, with brass furniture, had inscribed on a brass plate the following:-

JOHN SATTERTHWAITE BOLDEN.
BORN 10th APRIL, 1805,
DIED 12th MARCH, 1892.

The undertaker was Mr. Day, of Yeovil. Among those who sent wreaths or crosses were Mrs. Bolden (widow), Mrs. Clayton, Miss Russell, Mrs. Seaton, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls, Miss Morris, Mrs. Clayton's servants, Mrs. W. Stevens, Miss Violet Clayton, Mrs. John Coxhill, Miss Sims, Mrs. Phoebe Turner.

Deceased, who first came as Rector in 1863, was very much respected by all classes, and had among other good works restored the quaint and interesting church at his own expense, only resigning the living in favour of his son, and was in the habit of paying periodical visits to Preston Bissett. A memorial service was held at Bradford Abbas at the same time the funeral took place at Preston Bissett.
